ARTIST STATEMENT
I currently teach high school art at Upper Adams School District where I have taught since 1992. I have also taught a number of adult classes including portraiture and mosaic making. I have a BS in Art Education from Temple University and a MEd as a Reading Specialist from Shippensburg University. As a certified k-12 art teacher, I have had the opportunity to practice a wide array of art mediums, all of which I enjoy and create on a regular basis. My true love however leans more towards fine crafts, such as ceramics, jewelry and PMC Clay, mosaics and glass work. I also paint and draw, and have had numerous portrait commissions. As an artist who struggles with ADD, I find myself jumping around from medium to medium and combining many different craft making skills into one or more projects. My art reflects a diversity that comes from teaching public school art students for many years. It has developed and changed from rigid and realistic, to a looser, colorful, perhaps even playful art, which has come from years of observing young students create their art. The spontaneity that children have for simply making art purely for the love of creating it inspires me and I have strived over the years to be freer in my creations. Once all the technical aspects of art are learned, I believe the creation of art should be fun and enjoyable. As Pablo Picasso said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."
