ARTIST STATEMENT
My passion is to paint in plein air! The
landscape paintings I create have been called
very loose and painterly and sometimes
impressionistic. I try to explain the scene with
light, shadow and color. The beauty of the
landscape inspires me. The lakes, mountains,
woodlands, meadows or someone’s front yard can
excite me into a “Painting Day”.
My
paintings of rural, Southern Pennsylvania are
painted in plein air in all kinds of weather at
area parks, small towns and many are painted in
the Gettysburg National battlefield. I paint in
oils and pastels in a loose, impressionistic
style. My process begins with a sketch to
determine the dark and light values and the
center of interest. Next I draw with charcoal on
a prepared masonite board. Then the fun begins;
I paint the masses with color that I apply with
a pallet knife or brush or soft pastels. At this
time I do a lot of comparing of colors and their
values to each other. Some of my paintings are
done in a high light key, others are more
subdued. Lastly, I complete the work with
highlights and accents.
I began painting classes in the 1980’s at
Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in
Annapolis, Maryland. I studied with Bonnie Roth
Anderson and later with John Ebersberger, both
are color impressionists who studied with Henry
Hensche. I am now studying
landscape/color/composition with Cathy Mabius of
Summerdale, Pennsylvania.
