AM WTHU Christian Radio

During WTHU's Christian Radio Coalition's Coffee with the Community event at Cozy Restaurant on April 3, Coalition President Michael Betteridge gave an informative presentation about who they are and what is being planned when the new radio station airs for the first time on June 9.

In a nutshell, Coalition members are seeking community members' input in order to best serve the region. The community for WTHU consists of approximately 250,000 potential listeners in a 21 mile range from the station's location on Radio Lane in Thurmont. This includes points as far as Mont Alto and Orrtanna in Pennsylvania, and Taneytown, Hagerstown and Mount Airy in Maryland. According to Arbitron statistics, 46% of adults listen to Christian Radio. Therefore, this station has the opportunity to reach the 55,400 adults who live in that 21 mile radius.

The Coalition members' goals are to bring positive listening alternatives, provide participatory radio, provide local live remote broadcasts, present positive dialogues, showcase local musicians, and partner with local businesses. Starting June 9,the programming begins with local public safety announcements, traffic, weather reports and news reports about arts, entertainment and music.

WTHU will be a Christian-owned and operated radio station broadcasting contemporary Christian music and southern gospel with a local focus. The intent is to bring everyone together, all denominations along with all members of the community.

On May 17, a Partnership Banquet and Silent Auction will be held at the Lynnwood Complex. On May 21 the Coalition will speak to the Thurmont Economic Development Council. On June 9 WTHU Christian Radio goes on the air. On June 14, a Grand Opening Celebration will be held at the radio station, located on Radio Lane in Thurmont, with bands and a barbeque.

The Coalition hopes to double the station's power from 500 to 1000 watts in 2009; build a brand new studio in 2009; upgrade to HD Digital Radio for higher quality sound; and look for an FM radio license so broadcasting is possible in both AM and FM formats.

The Coalition consists of a 10 member Board of Directors, an 18 member theologically diverse Advisory Team and four consultants. Coalition members are inviting community members to give input and be part of this station. Call Micahel Betteridge at 301-639-4323.
