Thurmont Thespians 11th Season Offers New Plays and Musicals

Starting with auditions on Sunday, August 26 and Monday, Ausut 27, 2007 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, for a new fall comedy called "Tradin’ Paint" by Catherine Bush, the Thurmont Thespians will launch their 11th consecutive season of quality community theatre serving north central Maryland and south central Pennsylvania audiences.

"Tradin’ Paint" is a warm comedy, set in the heart of NASCAR country and is filled with laughs and fender- bumping excitement! Darla Frye is an auto parts clerk "fraught with low self esteem", but she runs into Lucky Tibbs, a NASCAR racing team crew chief and Dr. Hawley Smoot, a community college teacher and they both change her life forever.

Directed by Beth Royer Watson, "Tradin’ Paint" premiered professionally to rave reviews this spring at the Barter Theatre of Abington, VA. This will only be the second production and a Maryland premiere.

Tradin’ Paint will open Friday, November 2 for six performances over two weekends through Sunday, November 11, 2007 at the Thurmont American Legion. There will be a special dinner theatre production November 10, 2007 with baked ham and fried chicken.

Once again the Thespians will have an entry for the 2008 Maryland Community Theatre Festival held on January 18-20, 2008 in LaPlata, Maryland at the Port Tobacco Players Theatre.

Spence Watson will direct "Hunger" a new one-act play by Sheri Wilner. One preview of this play will be held in the social hall at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Thurmont on Friday, January 11 at 8:00 p.m. The Thurmont Thespians have won numerous awards for their Maryland festival entries the past five years, including four consecutive awards (2004-2007) for overall technical excellence.

The Thurmont Thespians’ spring 2008 musical will be Robert Fulghum’s classic "All I Needed To Know I Learned in Kindergarten" with auditions scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, January 21 and 22, 2008 in the social hall at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Thurmont.

The show, directed by Spence Watson, features a cast of five (three men and two women) and recounts the stories and recollections of Fulghum’s time in the pulpit of a small country church in Washington state in the 1960s and 70s. "Kindergarten" opens Friday, April 4, 2008 for two weekends at the Thurmont American Legion auditorium. There will be a special dinner theatre production on Saturday, April 12 with fried chicken and oysters.

The Thespians’ 2007-08 Season will close with the 11th Summer Teen Musical production of "Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Open auditions for this musical will be held Saturday, May 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the social hall of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Thurmont. All teens ages 13-18 are invited to audition for this Biblical extravaganza coming to Thurmont next summer.

The Thurmont Thespians is an all-volunteer staff non-profit community theatre of Maryland. There is a need for actors, singers, musicians, dancers, choreographers, music directors, set designers, lighting designers, skilled carpenters, make-up artists, costume designers, graphic artists, media writers and more. The Thespians are also looking to display the artwork of area artists, painters, sculptors and/or photographers in the lobby during their productions. If you are interested in volunteering or displaying your artwork, call 301-416-0864 and ask for Beth or Spence.
