Thurmont Lions Present Club’s
Prestigious Melvin Jones Awards

Melvin Jones Fellow Award recipient Kenny Favorite (left) is shown here with Lions Club first vice president Paul Cannada, president Susan Favorite, and secretary Shirley Long.

Melvin Jones, founder of the Lions Club International and a guiding principle for public-spirited people worldwide, once said "You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else."

The Thurmont Lions Club honors those within their organization who exemplify spirit of public service with the Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow Award and the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.

In the spirit of Melvin Jones, the Thurmont Lions Club celebrated their 75th Anniversary year by moving forward on a signature project to rehabilitate the Thurmont Trolley Trail into a walking/biking route through town and down to the site of the new Thurmont library.

Three years later, the town has seen the completion of the first phase of the project; and, the work is commencing on the second phase of the project.

The project has been led by Lion Gene Long — a master craftsman, a master planner and a master implementer. Lion Gene has spent untold hours planning, purchasing, wheeling and dealing, and brainstorming the trail into reality. He has worked tremendously hard to get materials donated or below cost.

To honor his dedication to this project, Lion Gene Long was awarded the Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow award.

Kenny Favorite has been an amazing supporter of the Thurmont Lions Club As a non-member, Kenny has stored materials for the club in his storage barn; helped with the club’s floats for the Thurmont Carnival parade; helped with the Easter egg hunts; the chef extraordinaire of the pit been sandwich sales. Since Kenny is an employee of the Maryland State Soil Conservation Department his help was tremendous in the trolley trail with design and permits. It is rare for a Melvin Jones Fellow award be given to a non-member, however, the Thurmont Lions Club presented Kenny Favorite the prestige award for his dedication to public service.
