51st Annual Community Show

This year marks the 51st anniversary of the Thurmont and Emmitsburg Community Show scheduled for September 7, 8 and 9, 2007 at Catoctin High School in Thurmont.

Over 2500 farm and garden, household, quilt, livestock, machinery and commercial displays are yours to enjoy during the three day event.

If you are interested in submitting an entry to the show, entries will be accepted on Thursday, September 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Friday, September 7, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the new gymnasium. Ribbons and $8,000.00 in prize money will be awarded.

The Thurmont and Emmitsburg Community Show will open its doors on September 7, 2007 at 6:00 p.m

The official opening ceremonies will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the announcement of the 2007-2008 Catoctin FFA Ambassador followed by a program honoring the 100th anniversary of the Thurmont Library and the 50th anniversary of the Emmitsburg Library. Individuals who will be recognized by the Emmitsburg Library are: Katie War then, Blanche Helmholtz, Joan Boyle, Jean Candle, William Rodman Candle, Chita Carr, Annette Rapp, William Carr, and Francis Smith. Individuals who will be recognized by the Thurmont Library are: the Ernest Haymaker Family, Victor Jargon, Ralph Forward, Grace Smith, William Riffle, Erin Dingle, Helen Flanagan and Margeuerite Baker. These individuals were very instrumental in the growth of the library in their communities.

Immediately following the program (approximately 8:30 p.m.) an auction of all baked goods exhibited at the show will be held in the auditorium. All grand champion and reserve champion baked goods will be sold at 9:00 p.m. Roger Rothenhoefer and Mike Miller will be the auctioneers.

On Saturday, the show opens at 9:00 a.m. and continues through 10:00 p.m. with activities such as the Beef, Sheep and Swine Fitting & Showing from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the popular Pet Show at 10:30 a.m. in front of the school. The pet show is open to all area residents.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Department and Farmers & Mechanics Bank will sponsor a children’s identification program from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Guardian Hose Company of Thurmont will have hands-on safety demonstrations from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m on Sunday in front of the Catoctin High School.

The Thurmont Grange will serve a Buffet-style Turkey and Ham Supper in the school cafeteria from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Prices: adults-$10.00; children under 12 - $5.00 and children under 5 - $4.00.

The Beef, Sheep and Swine sale will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Agriculture Shop area, with over 70 head of beef, sheep and swine to be sold.

Catoctin High School Band will perform several selections in the auditorium, beginning at 7:00 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., the Emmitsburg Community Chorus will be singing several old and new songs, lead by Director Peggy Burrier. Free admission to these musical events.

Farm machinery will be displayed throughout the event and the famous "Cane and Abel" Brown Swiss cattle will be exhibited at the show. Pat and Norman Sampson will have on display their Alpacas and Emus will be exhibited by Jim and Peggy Royer. There also will be a petting zoo with various animals and pony rides.

On Sunday, September 9th, the show opens at 9:00 a.m., with the Goat Show at 9:30 a.m. and the Dairy Show at 10:00 a.m. The Decorated Animal Contest will begin at noon and $50.00 in prize money will be awarded. At 12:00 noon, in the school cafeteria, a Chicken Bar-b-que will be served by the Catoctin FFA Alumni. Prices: adults - $7.50; under 12 - $5.00; and carryout trays are $8.50.

The 28th annual Catoctin Mountain Horseshoe Pitching Contest will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the 27th annual Cross Cut Sawing Contest will begin at 1:00 p.m. under the tent in the Ag Shop area. There are categories for everyone – men, women, boys and girls.Barnyard Olympics for youth and adults will be held in front of the school at 1:30 p.m. There will also be a Martial Arts demonstration in the old gymnasium at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

The Thurmont Library will again have books for sale in the old gymnasium. The sale will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening. Donations of books will be accepted between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7. Please note that magazines, text books and encyclopedia sets are not accepted. This popular sale, held in the ‘old’ Catoctin gym, features a wide variety of books and movies.

Also in the old gymnasium, John Kinnaird will have vintage photographs of Thurmont on display and Helen Mackley will showcase her collection of antique buttons and emblems.

The Thurmont Community Ambulance will be having free blood pressure checkups on Saturday and Sunday.

The show closes at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 9th.

The Community Show is sponsored by the Thurmont Grange, the Catoctin FFA Chapter, Catoctin FFA Alumni, Maryland Agricultural Fair Board and the Maryland State Grange.
