Community Welcomes Return of Bollinger’s Restaurant Returns

After a 4 year hiatus, Bollinger’s Restaurant has returned to Thurmont. Locals will remember Bollinger’s Restaurant as was a local favorite for dining and socializing.

The old restaurant was part of Thurmont Plaza for 32 years until the shopping center was sold to a developer and the restaurant lost their lease. Subway now stands where Bollinger’s used to preside.

Bollinger’s Restaurant has a rich history in Thurmont all the way back to 1946 when Eva Bollinger opened a small restaurant. The restaurant closed in 1970 until only to be reopened again by Eva’s eldest son Junie in 1971. With Eva, fondly called "Momma B", by his side, he continued until 1989 when his daughter in-law Donna bought the restaurant.

Donna continues part two of the family history by reopening Bollinger’s. And, once again it’s a story of a mother running a restaurant with her son and this time her daughter, too. Donna and her son Josh own the restaurant. Donna’s daughter Carrie Witmer is manager.

After four years of caring for sick family members and caring for a new granddaughter, the timing was just right for the reopening of Bollinger’s Restaurant. "I let it all in God’s hands and it just happened," said Donna. She relies heavily on her faith to give her strength and will continue the restaurant’s tradition of a new scripture on the sign board daily.

The new location is also larger than before and can now seat up to 60 at one time. The menu has all the familiar items — very fresh, homemade soup, salads, and baked goods and fresh daily hamburger, steak, salmon cakes, and crabcakes. But, it also has a lot of new items. The restaurant has a full-time baker, Krystal Turner, who makes all the homemade desserts.

"We’re very excited that the community has welcomed back so eagerly...it’s really more than we ever expected," said Donna.

Bollinger’s Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Tuesday through Friday 6:00 a.m to 8:00 p.m. and is closed Sunday and Monday. Take-out is available. Credit and debit cards are not accepted.

Bollinger’s Restaurant is located at 210 N. Church Street in Thurmont. For more information or for takeout orders, call 301-271-3500.
