News In Brief

LEPC Chemical Drill PSA Planned for October 22

Emergency responders from Frederick County, MD, will participate in an exercise on October 22, 2006. The exercise is designed to validate and improve your community’s response to a crisis. The fictional exercise simulates a mock chemical spill that will test each organization’s (Thurmont Emergency Services, Fire and Rescue Services, Hazardous Material Response Teams, American Red Cross, Frederick County Sheriff’s Department, and Maryland State Police) emergency response plans and capabilities to respond to this type of an event in your local area.

Emergency responders will simulate a hazardous material response and treat volunteers who are pretending to be victims. Again, the chemical spill is not real; nevertheless, the response will be as realistic as possible. Area hospitals, city and county police, fire and emergency teams, State and local officials, other government agencies and private sector partners will be participating.

The area where the exercise will take place will be clearly marked, but we want to make sure all area residents know about the exercise in advance and we ask for your patience and support if the exercise disrupts your daily routine.

There are simple steps that county residents can take now to prepare themselves and their loved ones for a real chemical spill: Make a kit, make a plan, and get informed. By gathering supplies to meet basic needs, discussing what to do during an emergency with your family in advance, and by being aware of the risks and appropriate actions, you will be better prepared for the unexpected and ultimately, you will help better prepare your community and the county. Visit www.co.frederick.md.us or call 301-271-0905 (ext. 217) Thurmont Town Police Chief Greg Eyler to learn more about preparedness activities.

Grace & Glorie Play Coming November 3

This charming comedy–drama, set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of rural Appalachia, was presented in a 1998 Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie, starring Gina Rowland. Grace, a feisty 90-year-old cancer patient, has checked herself out of the hospital and returned to her beloved homestead cottage to die alone. The volunteer hospice worker who appears at her door with the pain medication Grace willfully left behind is a Wharton M.B.A., recently transplanted to this rural backwater from Philadelphia. Gloria is tense, unhappy and guilt ridden; her only child was killed in an auto accident while she was driving. As she attempts to care for and comfort the cantankerous rustic, this sophisticated urbanite gains new perspectives on values and life’s highs and lows.

  • "A lot of good humor ... artfully designed to confirm hopes.... Offers the opportunity for good, honest, grandstanding acting." N.Y. Post.

CYA Football Honors Fallen Soldiers

On Saturday, September 16, 2006, the Catoctin Youth Association’s (CYA) football and cheerleading league dedicated a flagpole and memorial stone in memory of two local men who lost their lives in the service of our country.

These soldiers, 1St. Lt. Robert Seidel III and Lcpl. James W. Higgins, Jr., were both participants in the CYA program as youth in the community.

CYA Football and Cheerleading President James Angerett led the ceremony, lauding the courage of these two courageous young men. The Marine Corps Honor Guard and local officials attended. All players from all age levels of the CYA football program stood quietly along the sidelines during the solemn tribute. Warren Zentz sang the Star Spangled Banner.

The flag that was flown over Arlington National Cemetery in honor of these soldiers now flies on the hillside overlooking the CYA field behind Eyler Park in Thurmont. Mike and Greg Campbell raised the flag on the Thurmont flagpole they had donated. Kinnaird Memorials of Thurmont donated the memorial stone.
