People Making the News

• Laurie Burrier of Rocky Ridge, a junior at Hood College in Frederick, has been named to the 2006 All-Atlantic Women’s Colleges Conference Team for lacrosse.  Laurie scored 17 goals for the 2006 season, added a team-leading 17 assists and paced the Blazers with 34 points total.  She scored one game winning goal, had 18 draw controls and ranked fourth with 31 ground balls.  Laurie is a history major at Hood and is working towards her teaching certificate.  Laurie is a former soccer and lacrosse player at Catoctin High School and graduated in 2003.

• Elizabeth Fink, daughter of Cari Graff and Michael Cherry of Emmitsburg was recently inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma national freshman honor society at Salisbury University, Salisbury, Maryland.

Fink is a freshman majoring in dance. She is a member of SU Dance Company, is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, and is a Dean’s List student.

Phi Eta Sigma encourages and recognizes high scholastic achievement among freshmen that have a 3.5 or better cumulative grade point average.

At Salisbury University, some 7,000 students in 42 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs pursue liberal arts and professional degrees. Located on the Eastern Shore, 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and 20 miles from the Chesapeake Bay, Salisbury is 2½ hours from Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Norfolk, Va., and Wilmington, Delaware. Princeton Review ranks Salisbury State as one of the top universities in the nation.

• Rebecca Corbell, a home-schooled student in Fairfield, Pa., will join a select group of students representing their schools, communities, and states as People to People student leaders. Corbell has been accepted into the People to People Future Leaders Summit on Theater and the Arts in New York on June 19-28, 2006. All students accepted into a People to People program must meet rigorous academic and leadership requirements. Corbell was nominated and accepted for the honor based on outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

The 2006 People to People Future Leaders Summits will convene at Columbia University, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, University of California, Los Angeles, and Stanford.

Rebecca is the daughter of Raymond and Jennifer Buchheister the owners and publishers of The Dispatch newspapers in Emmitsburg and Thurmont.

• Michael Facine Jr. was recently appointed the new branch manager for Bank of America in Thurmont. He replaces Bill Zentz who retired at the end of March.

Mike brings to the bank 23 years of experience with Bank of America. He was most recently branch manager with the banks’ Redland Road, Rockville location.

A native Marylander, Mike grew up in the Olney and Montgomery County areas. He now resides with his wife and two daughters in Adamstown.

"I am excited to be here in Thurmont. I remember coming to Thurmont as a child to eat at the Cozy and play at Cunningham Falls," said Mike.

"It’s an interesting community - very different from where I came from and I like that everyone is so friendly and everyone knows everyone," said Mike. "I really look forward to getting know as many community members as possible," he added.

Although Mike plans to keep his family’s home in Adamstown, he will be involved in the community. "I’m planning to help at the firemen’s carnival this summer and participate in other community projects," he said.
