Emmitsburg American Legion Donates $3,500

The Emmitsburg American Legion Post 121 Ladies Auxiliary recently donated over $3,500 to support the Emmitsburg Food Bank, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.

The donations were made possible from two fundraisers held by the Legion this year. The first annual Poker Pub Crawl and the club’s annual White Elephant auction.

Shown above (back, L-R) is Dawn Richards, representing the American Cancer Society which received $881.40, Ladies Auxiliary Committee Chairperson Patty Adams, Ruth Seidel and Phyllis Kelly of the Emmitsburg Food Bank which received $1,762.80. In the front row is Joan Hobbs, and son Dalton, representing the American Heart Association which received a check for $881.40.  Committee members Cindy Marthers and Mark George are not pictured.

People Making News

Catoctin High School junior Morgan Maze recently attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. The conference, which invites top-notch scholars from across the nation, introduces these future leaders to Congress, the Senate, the Supreme Court and other aspects of today’s government. The students are invited to observe these entities in action and then teaching them to apply it in models and simulations of rulings by the Supreme Court, bills passed by Congress, and crucial decision-making by the President and his cabinet.

While attending the conference, Morgan had the opportunity to meet leaders such as Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Paul Sarbanes, Representative Roscoe Bartlett, and ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl. While visiting Capitol Hill, she watched Congress in action by listening to on a Congressional Committee hearing. She also visited the National Press Club to hear a briefing and observed the Supreme Court in action.

Morgan was able to attend the six-day conference with the help of local residents and businesses who sponsored her trip with financial assistance. After graduation, Morgan would like to attend the United States Naval Academy where she hopes to pursue a career in law. Morgan is the daughter of Kelli Maze of Emmitsburg and Steven "Sam" Maze of Garner, North Carolina.

Up-County Programs

Up-County Family Center, 304 W. Lincoln Avenue in Emmitsburg is offering a free, 8-week healthy weight-loss program that will help you get started on meeting your goals. The class is held Mondays, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. For more information call 301-447-2810, ext. 3009.

Up-County Family Center hosts a Mom’s Club on Tuesdays, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. beginning January 10, 2006 at the Center, 303 W. Lincoln Avenue, Emmitsburg. The club offers peer support and recreation for those who are pregnant or parenting a child under the age of 4.

Afterschool Program

Registration is underway for the winter session at the Creative Kids Academy of Emmitsburg. The Academy is a ministry of Elias Lutheran Church of Emmitsburg and works in partnership with Trinity United Methodist Church to offer after school programs in art, drama, music and dance for area youth.

The winter session offers a teen and children’s praise choir for ages 5 through 16, hands-on art classes for ages 6 through 9, a beginning acting class for ages 11 to 16 and Miss Debbi’s Ballet program for ages 5 through 12. Afterschool Program

Catoctin High School’s Safe and Sane Graduation Committee is holding a fundraiser featuring plush bear sporting a Cougar letterman’s jacket. The bears are on sale for $15 each and can be embroidered with a name for $5 more. The bears are on sale at all wrestling and basketball sporting events. In other news, the committee will be hosting a Basket Bingo on February 5th, possibly a dance in March, and a golf tournament on April 28 at Maple Run Golf Course, Thurmont.

Local Equestrian Rescue Farm Offers Seminars

Tranquility Farm Equestrian Center, a local horse rescue farm, will host a Kenny Harlow Seminar entitled "Training With Trust" on February 23, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The seminar will be held at Tranquility Farm, 11819 Whates Lane, Thurmont. The Center will also sponsor a seminar in Equiery in cooperation with Monocacy Equine Veterinary Associates, P.A. on February 25, 2006, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Monocacy Equine Veterinary Clinic, in Dickerson, Maryland. To register call 301- 607-4025.

Best Business Decoration: Carriage House, Rebecca Pearl Gallery, and Feud House

An honorable mention award went to residents at 4075 Carrick Court, 1303 Huntley Circle, 101 E. Main Street, 1 Reeny Court, 1 Adams Avenue, 4 Adams Avenue, 41 Irishtown Road, 53 Second Avenue, 3010 Stonehurst, 4065 Carrick Court, and to businesses Ambulance Company, OTT House, Briggs Associates, and Callie’s Collectibles.

In the Thurmont Christmas Decorations contest, the winners were Harry J. Fraley, 5 Terben Court; Jeffrey Harbaugh, 100 Stull Court; David Fogle, 121 Water Street; Patty Ling, 9 S. Altamont Avenue, and Tim and Terri Ridentour, 11 William Drive. The Best Commercial Window Display award went to Little Shop of Florals at 129 East Main Street.
