Emmitsburg Baseball and Softball Wrap-Up

Jeannie Doane

The Emmitsburg Baseball and Softball League finished its 2006 season with a well attended picnic on July 16th at Memorial Park in Emmitsburg. The picnic was well attended by both players and family members who were happy to help celebrate the success of the season. After those in attendance enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch the league president, Brian Holt, along with each coach handed out trophies to the individual players. A door prize drawing was awarded to winner Garrett Sprankle who won 4 tickets to a National’s Baseball game. The tickets were donated by John H. Hampshire, Inc. in Baltimore, MD. Those in attendance also enjoyed a dunking tank and the 3rd Annual Homerun Derby for entertainment. Winners of each division included: Justin Reaver for boys tball, Ally Rippeon for girls tball,, Kayla Umbel for girls 8 and under softball, Brianna Holt for girls 10 and under softball, Stephanie Andrew for girls 12 and under softball, David Shields, Jr. for 7 and 8 year old boys, Justin Martin for 9 and 10 year old boys, Patrick Reaver for 11 and 12 year old boys, Ben Andrew for 13 and 14 year old boys, Sandy Umbel for the women and Carl Dixon for the men’s division. Even though the weather proved to be another dreadfully hot day the picnic appeared to be enjoyed by all of those who attended.

The organization managed to shine brightly in each league in which they were represented this year. They managed to have a team place either first and or second in each traveling league.

The Redwings representing the 13 and 14 year old boys division finished 2nd in the South Adams Pony League with a 12 and 9 record. In the girls 12 and under softball division the Wildcats placed 2nd in the Frederick County Softball League with a record of 8 and 2. The two 11 & 12 year old boys teams managed to take 1st and 2nd place in the Mason Dixon Pony League bronco division. The Red Sox took first with an amazing record of 12 and 2 while the Dodgers finished 2nd with a record of 14 and 4. The Giants representing boys ages 9 & 10 in the Mason Dixon Pony League mustang division took 2nd place with a 14 and 2 record. On the home front the Astros placed 1st in the minor league representing boys 7 & 8 years old. The minor league All Star team also won the Fairfield tournament with a 4 & 0 record. In an amazing coincidence all eight tball teams managed to tie for first place.

The league is currently preparing for their fall ball season which will begin shortly. Fall ball will be open to children 9 through 12 years of age. Anyone interested in playing in a fall baseball league should contact Jeff Topper at 301-447-6653 for 11 and 12 year olds or Angie Welty at 301-447-3003 for 9 and 10 year olds.

All who are interested in attending the league meetings are invited to attend the next meeting on October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at the Emmitsburg Ambulance Hall.
