The
1LT Robert A. Seidel III Memorial Golf Tournament
is scheduled for Friday, October 27, 2006 at Maple Run Golf
Course in Thurmont. All proceeds from the tournament benefit
The 1LT Robert A. Seidel III Memorial Scholarship Fund, one of
over 550 funds held by The Community Foundation of Frederick
County.
This fund awards scholarships in 1LT Seidel’s memory
to graduating seniors from Catoctin High School, who exhibit
academic promise, have participated in at least one varsity
sport during their senior year, demonstrate an outstanding
record of community service, and are active in their faith.
1LT Seidel graduated in 2000 from Catoctin High School, where
he played football and baseball and excelled academically. He
was an altar server for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and
volunteered as the high school representative on the parish
council. He went on to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy
at West Point in 2004. 1LT Seidel was killed in action on May
18, 2006 in service to his country in Iraq. He died with three
fellow soldiers when a bomb detonated near their vehicle
during combat operations in Baghdad.
The golf tournament’s shotgun start is
scheduled for 10:00 a.m. The entry fee is $75.00 per person or
$250.00 for a foursome, and includes a golf tournament T-shirt
and a pizza dinner at Lawyer’s Barn in Graceham. Prizes for
the longest drive, closest to the pin, straightest drive, and
eighteen-hole best ball scramble are planned. Payment
information is included on the registration form. Hole
sponsorship opportunities are also available beginning at $100
per hole. Registration and sponsorship forms are due no later
than October 13, 2006 and may be obtained by contacting David
Giannini at 240.405.0679 or dgiannini@serviceglass.com or by
downloading them at the Foundation’s
website: www.cffredco.org.
The Community Foundation is Frederick
County’s premier organization for promoting local philanthropy
and charitable giving by working with donors to set up funds
that, in turn, award educational scholarships or grants to
area nonprofits. In its 20-year history, more than $15 million
has been returned to the Frederick County community. Over
one-fourth of the funds held by the Community Foundation honor
the legacies of deceased loved ones, as in the case of the
fund remembering 1LT Seidel. To learn more about establishing
a fund with the Community Foundation, visit www.cffredco.org
or call 301.695.7660.
Those unable to participate in the
golf tournament may still support The 1LT Robert A. Seidel III
Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contributions in any amount can be
made payable to and mailed to The Community Foundation of
Frederick County, MD, Inc., 312 East Church Street, Frederick,
MD 21701. Indicate “1LT Robert A. Seidel III Fund” in the
