Frederick County students will join others across the nation in commemorating Red Ribbon Week October 23 through 31 to fight the illegal use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco and to celebrate a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
Red Ribbon Week began in memory of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who was brutally murdered by drug traffickers 20 years ago. This is the 17th year FCPS students will participate. Safe and Drug-Free Schools facilitator Linda Gouker invites
the public to join students and staff in taking a visible stand against drugs by wearing a red ribbon to show their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.
In morning announcements, students across the county will join in the "Pledge to Stay Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Free," hear supportive messages and have the opportunity to sign pledges. The pledge is, "I pledge allegiance to myself and who I want to be. I
can make my dreams come true, if I believe in me. I pledge to stay in school and learn the things I need to know to make the world a better place for kids like me to grow. I promise to keep my dreams alive and be all that I can be. I know I can and that’s because I pledge to stay
healthy and drug free!"
Thurmont Middle students will wrap up the week with a dance on Friday after receiving items such as bookmarks, pencils, candy and special messages in preceding days.
Thurmont Primary is hosting a "Drug Free, I Have the Power" poster contest. Students are wearing red and invited to sign pledges Monday, wearing shirts backward Tuesday to signify "turning their backs on drugs," wearing slippers Wednesday to "give drugs the
slip," bringing stuffed animals to demonstrate "give hugs not drugs" Thursday, and wearing favorite sports team shirts for "team up against drugs" Friday.
