Congratulations to Thurmont’s Elected Officials

Michael L. Cady
Vice President of the Frederick County Board of County Commissioners

Special to The Catoctin Banner

Frederick County has twelve incorporated municipalities, one of which is the Town of Thurmont. Each municipality elects its own local leaders to not only make administrative and legislative decisions directly impacting on its community, but also works with the County Commissioners in varying degrees to bring additional services and funding to its town. The Town of Thurmont is a sterling example of how such cooperative working relationships between the two elected bodies provides positive results that benefits its residents and businesses. I regret to say that such high level of collaboration does not exist everywhere in the County.

Here is a listing of the County’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) commitment to Thurmont of $16.1 million that reflect our high level of teamwork:

  • Thurmont Primary School Addition (To open 8/08) - $5.2 million
  • Thurmont Regional Library (To open 4/07) - $8.8 million.
  • Thurmont Regional Sheriff’s Office Substation - $1 million.

On August 9, the County Commissioners met with the Thurmont elected leaders and the following motion was passed by the County Commissioners: "The County Commissioners will give conceptual support in a joint effort with the Town of Thurmont and the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office to develop a Thurmont police substation, and approving the expenditure of $75,000 from the County FY 2006 funds from the Site F purchase fund for the design phase of the project, to direct the County Attorney’s Office to develop a Memorandum of Understanding on the particulars of the construction and for the Count Division of Public Works to manage the construction of the facility.

  • Emmitsburg / Thurmont Regional Park (Land Acquisition 2011) - $1 million.

The County is interested in acquiring 100+ acres in the Emmitsburg / Thurmont area to build a District Park with both active and passive recreational amenities.

Thank you Thurmont and, especially your elected leaders, for working with us to serve all of you.
