I am sure that most of the readers of this column have received that white envelope from IRS, regarding information about the Economic Stimulus Payments for
Social Security, Veterans and Other Beneficiaries. If you haven't received that white envelope, here is the story behind it.
Congress passed the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 and President Bush signed it. This act provides for economic stimulus payments to be made to over 130
million American households. It is my understanding that the payments will be made starting in May 2008. Now that's not far off and to receive a payment in 2008, you have to file a
2007 tax return. If you DO NOT have to file a 2007 tax return for tax purposes, you still have to file a return to get your stimulus payment. Remember, to be eligible, you must have
a total of $3,000 or more of qualifying income.
If you need help filling out Form 1040A I suggest you call the IRS hotline at 866-234-2942 or visit your nearest IRS office. Don't miss out on this
opportunity. The deadline for filing for the stimulus payment is October 15, 2008. Ron and I just pass this bit of information on to you for what it might be worth.
Getting back to community tidbits...I have to congratulate Bollinger's Restaurant, celebrating their first successful year at their new location. As always,
their good food and friendly service speaks for itself.
When I first came to the Thurmont area, my neighbor was quick to inform me that Dee's Hair Stylists Salon, located on Center Street, was the place to go to
get my hair done. Diane (Dee) has been a Thurmont tradition like George Wireman's Thurmont World, serving the community for over 30 years.
Ron and I enjoyed the Business Expo on March 28th at Catoctin High School. This was the fourth year for the event and I feel sure that the attendance this
year surpassed last year's. I enjoyed the feast that Mountain Gate provided and I lost count of how many times Ron sampled the cookies at Cool Beans. This is a great event and serves
to remind the local citizens what is available in Thurmont before going out of town.
I was delighted to learn that the trolley project received a $55,000 grant and is full steam ahead in restoring this historic piece of equipment. I have been
enjoying the trolley trail during my travels and noticed the progress being made at the new library on Moser Road. Thurmont has so much to offer and the citizens are so friendly, I
guess that is what makes it such an outstanding community.
In closing, I'd like to tip my hat to Joe Eyler regarding his plans for a Thurmont Heritage Days. That sounds just super, Joe, and I am sure that you will get
a lot of support from the citizens, because I have found in my travels that they are very proud of their heritage.
Looking forward to a delightful spring and seeing you in my travels.
Traveling Terri
