9th - Strawberry Hill's environmental educator, Eddy Rubin, will lead a "Dusk Discovery" hike on Wednesday, July 9, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. "This is a walk to experience the special time of the day when the daytime animals are starting to wind down their activities and the nighttime animals are starting to emerge," says Rubin. "This transition is a great time to hear the final songs of birds for the day, as well as the initial calls of owls."

The event, which is open to the public and appropriate for all ages, is free for Strawberry Hill members, $3.75 for non-members. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. Please register by July 8 by calling Strawberry Hill at (717) 642-5840. Strawberry Hill is located at 1537 Mount Hope Road, three miles outside Fairfield, Pennsylvania.

Thurmont Annual Carnival

The Guardian Hose Company, Inc. of Thurmont will hold the Annual Thurmont Carnival Monday July 7 through Saturday July 12. Rides will be provided by Majestic Midways of York, PA. Pay $17 on Monday July 7 or Wednesday July 9 for rides from 6:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. No refunds or rain clause.

Presale ride tickets are $10 for fourteen (a savings of 53¢ per ticket). They are good Monday through Saturday. Presale ride tickets are available at the Thurmont Offices of Bank of America, PNC Bank and Woodsboro Bank or at the carnival grounds from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, and Sunday, July 6. Tuesday, July 8, will be reduced ride night where rides cost one ticket less per ride. Presale tickets may be used.

Entertainment includes: Monday-"Allen Brown", Tuesday-"Catoctin Promise Band" and fireworks at 10:15 p.m., Wednesday-"All Star Band", Thursday-"Bone Shakers" and parade at 6:30 p.m., Friday-"Big Cam and the Lifters", Saturday-"Blue Daze".

Catoctin Mountain Park Announces Summer Activities Schedule

The following interpretive programs are scheduled during June, July and August, at Catoctin Mountain Park. Owens Creek Campground will be open for family camping through November 16 on a first-come, first-served basis. Campfire Programs will be held on Saturday evenings during June and July at 9:00 p.m. and Saturday evenings in August at 8:30 p.m. at the Owens Creek Amphitheater. Whiskey Still Talks will be held on Sundays, June 15 and 22, from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Blue Blazes Still.

An Outdoor Sports Expo will be held Saturday, June 14 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Owens Creek Amphitheater. Cabin rentals are available through October 31 at Camp Misty Mount by calling the Misty Mount office at 301-271-3140 to make your reservation or for further information.

Catoctin Mountain Park is one of 391 units administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The park Visitor Center, located on State Route 77 three miles west of Thurmont, Maryland, is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
