Alley Raymond Knott

Allen Raymond Knott, age 84, of Emmitsburg, Md., died on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 at the Green Acres-Adams County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gettysburg, following a brief illness.

Born Nov. 9, 1924 in Rocky Ridge, Md., he was the son of the late Austin J. and Nora (Harbaugh) Knott. He was predeceased by his first wife of 58 years, Florence M. (Krietz) Knott. He is survived by his current wife of five years, Elizabeth Enright.

Allen was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving during W.W.II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was inducted into the 303rd Air Service Group on March 17, 1943 and served as a medical corpsman, where he earned the rank of corporal and was awarded five medals. He was discharged from active duty on Nov. 24, 1945. He continued his working career with the U.S. Military at the Department of Defense as a laboratory technician at Ft. Detrick, Frederick, Md. until his retirement. He then worked part-time at Mt. St. Mary’s University and St. Anthony’s Cemetery. Allen was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Emmitsburg, Emmitsburg Memorial V.F.W. Post 6658, the American Legion Francis X. Elder Post 121 and the senior center in Emmitsburg.

He enjoyed hunting, gardening, bowling and playing cards.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughters, Joyce Orndorff and husband Paul of Rocky Ridge, Md., Mary Topper and husband Jack, of Emmitsburg, Md., and Gloria Blackburn and husband James of Lake Mary, Fla.; grandchildren, Jean Marie Joy and husband Barry of Emmitsburg, Md., Jeffrey D. Topper and wife Theresa of Emmitsburg, Md., Doug Orndorff of Fairfield, Pa., Sandy Umbel and husband Chad of Emmitsburg, Md., Mark Topper and wife Sherry of Rocky Ridge, Md. and Richard Brashears and wife Lori of Lake Mary, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Erica and Ian Orndorff, Zachary, Jay, Brian, Courtney and Melanie Topper, Justin, Benjamin and Stephanie Andrew, Kayla Umbel, Rylyn, Luke, Sophie and Wade Brashears; siblings, Joseph Knott of Hagerstown, Md., Corrine Woods of Thurmont, Md., and Nora Hilton of Thurmont, Md.; step-children, Jim Enright of Tenn., Joe Enright of Cumberland, Md., John Enright of Leesburg, Va., and Mary Enright of Mt. Airy, Md.

He was predeceased by siblings, Regina Sweeney and Clarence Knott.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg with the Rev. Vincent O’Malley, C.M. as celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Anthony’s Shrine Cemetery in Emmitsburg. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, where a prayer service will be held at 8:00 p.m.
