Thurmont library gains new storage

(1/15) The Friends of the Thurmont Regional Library have gained a new storage unit for their book sales stock, courtesy of area Eagle Scouts.

Eagle Scout Seth Young explained his project to the Thurmont Board of Commissioners, at their January 14 meeting, which led to the construction of a shed located at the Thurmont library in the effort to relieve the friends of having to store their surplus books off-site.

“My Eagle Project,” Young said, “was a twenty by twenty-four foot shed for the Friends of the Thurmont Regional Library. It is used for them to store books for their fundraiser.” The friends sell books during the Thurmont & Emmitsburg Community Show to help raise funds for the library.

“It's going to be a great place for them, as their other place that they were keeping them (an off-site garage) was starting to become... a place that they could not keep them anymore. So hopefully it's (the new shed) a good place for them,” Young told the commissioners.

“It took two months once we started building,” he stated, “but a lot longer than that to get everything else (that needed to be accomplished).” The Eagle Scout said he had help from his father, Sean Young, in drafting the plans for the project.

“We built one shelf for them, and then I think they were talking about some different types of shelves they wanted to purchase and put in there,” he said. Young also thanked the town staff for their assistance with the project, and also noted a number of other Eagle Scouts helped him with the shed.

Mayor Kinnaird described the effort as “a fantastic project. We congratulate you. It's a great addition to the library and our community.”

Young's father, Sean Young, said, “Of course I'm very, very proud. I grew up in Thurmont... of course I grew up with the library downtown. It's a very nice facility they have. It'll finally be nice they have somewhere on premises... not such a chore for them (transporting the sale books from the library to the storage shed).”
